Orlando, FLA – Following a five month search and interview process the FIAAA Board of Directors is excited to announce that Mr. Andy Chiles, CMAA has been selected as the new Executive Director of the association starting on Monday May 6th, 2019 following the 41st Annual FIAAA State Conference. Chiles will become only the second executive director in the history of the organization, as he will replace Mr. Ronald Balazs who is retiring this spring following an outstanding 13 year term.
Chiles currently serves as the Director of Athletics at Lake Nona High School in Orlando, Florida, in which he will continue to serve as he takes on his new role with the FIAAA this spring. Chiles began his outstanding career in education at Miami Sunset High School working as a teacher and a coach under now FIAAA Hall of Fame administrator Mr. George Phelan. It was here that he discovered his passion for interscholastic athletics and was encouraged to become more involved in the administration of the entire athletic department. Phelan put the young coach and educator to work learning about all of the intricacies of education based athletic administration. Chiles moved on to become the Athletic Business Manager at Felix Varela High School in 2000, again working under a hall of fame administrator Ron Balazs. Following Balazs retirement from education in 2004, Chiles was promoted to the position of Director of Athletics, a position he held for five years. In 2009, he took on the new challenge of opening a large public high school, and helped to build a program from the ground up, as he moved north to Orlando and helped facilitate the opening of Lake Nona High School.
His work as an exceptional athletic administrator and highly respected servant leader is evident through his contributions to several state and national professional organizations. Chiles was elected to the Florida Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Board of Directors in 2001, and then appointed to a term as the 32nd President of the FIAAA in 2008-2009. He served many different roles within the organization, including that of district director and most notably Chairman of the Awards Committee, which he will continue to lead until this May.
Chiles is also nationally renowned for his contributions and leadership to the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, in which he would served a term on the NIAAA Board of Directors from 2011-2015 after winning the Region A At-Large election. Chiles was selected by the board to serve as the 35th President in 2014, where he made substantial contributions to membership growth and organizational structure which have proven to be vital to the progress of the organization. Under his leadership the NIAAA saw record membership reach nearly 9,000 athletic administrators. Additionally, he was responsible for the creation of a pair of sub-committees on the board that directly impacted membership benefits. His service to the organization started in 2001 with his appointment to the State Coordinator position for the Leadership Training Institute. He has also served as an NIAAA National Teaching Faculty member for LTC 705.
Cleary, Chiles has been a leader for growth and change within the Florida High School Athletic Association, serving on the Athletic Directors Advisory Committee from 2007-2009, and later elected to the Board of Directors representing the public schools in section two. He is currently serving as the board President.
