The Florida High School Athletic Association announced Wednesday that its baseball state series would be condensed beginning in 2019. No longer will there be one week between games.
Playoff games in Class 1A-4A will now be held Tuesday and Friday, with games in 5A-9A taking place Wednesday, Saturday and Wednesday. The week saved from the state series would be applied to the preseason to give teams an extra week for arm care.
The 2019 Florida High School Baseball State Championships are scheduled for May 22-31. The location of the event will be determined by the FHSAA this summer following a thorough evaluation of bids received.
In other baseball news, the FHSAA Baseball Advisory Committee voted unanimously Monday to move the two-hour time limit for junior varsity games to two and a half hours for a standalone game. For doubleheaders featuring junior varsity followed by varsity, it will remain at two hours. The committee also voted to allow schools to have a throwing program at the same time as preseason conditioning.
Both of the votes are contingent upon approval of the FHSAA Athletic Directors Advisory Committee, which will review and vet the items in early September. The latter change would be a change to current policy and would need final approval from the Board of Directors.
